Thank God january is over! :P
Dear
reader,
Gosh, am I
glad that January is over. I have told you I was busy before, but this month
really took the cake. However, before I will get into all that, I am first
going to write a bit about Christmas and New Years! :D
I had a
lovely Christmas. The first day I just spent with my parents, which was as nice
as always!... Except that an ant colony had made its home in our tree and
suddenly started to roaming about when we started to open the presents in the
morning. So whenever I went over to the tree to take up a present I wacked some
ants hahaha. I must say I didn’t feel like it was very much in the spirit of
Christmas (with peace on earth and all that), but what can you do?
I got some
really awesome presents, such as the DVD Arthur Christmas (which is one of the
most fun Christmas movies I have ever seen!), a paperblanks notebook (these are
rather expensive. I use those whenever I go to conferences, so I will always be
able to find the notes I took easily) and a book entitled Writing Death and Absence in the Victorian Novel by Jolene
Zagarovich (I really needed this book for my research). The best gift, however,
was my mom’s reaction to her present: I had gotten her tickets to a New Years
concert by Wibi Soerjadi (a famous Dutch pianist and composer).

Well overdue Sheffield trip report with pictures!

reader,
And now, for my very much overdue trip report of my visit to Sheffield! I have to say I really enjoyed my visit to Sheffield. We traveled from Schiphol to Manchester by
plane after which we took the train from the airport to Sheffield. There we
took the tram directly to the B&B. After walking around for a while and
cursing the google maps printout which I made (which is always super confusing,
since you never know which way is up or down… we almost went the wrong way
because of it) we were debating whether or not we were in the right street. It
did not last long before I spotted the B&B though…. at the top of a very,
veerrryyy steep hill. Imagine this: three people walking up a steep hill of
which two are dragging a really heavy suitcase behind them. I am sure that the neightbours
had a good laugh.
(It's the Victorian house on the left... Yep, steep hill is steep)

Trip to York, Materials of Mourning conference

readers,
Here is the
account of my trip to York, as promised. I hope you will enjoy it! :D
Day 1:
The flight and train ride went very
smooth. We took off at 12.10 in Amsterdam and arrived at about 15.30 at the Bed
and Breakfast, where we were received a warm welcome from Nigel, the owner. He
immediately explained to us how to get to the city center etc. and talked us
into trying a real English breakfast (even though we had first decided not to
take one haha!). I highly recommend this B&B, as their service is brilliant! :D The interior is nice and cozy and the rooms are quite specious. The bathroom is a bit on the small side, but it's big enough if you are just staying there for a few days... And the owners are super friendly! Trip to York and working for disney-winkel.nl :D
Dear reader,
Just a quick update before I go to York tomorrow. I am
really sorry for neglecting my weblog, but I have been insanely busy (as always
I suppose haha). I have been doing nothing but reading as I have to keep up
with my tutorial, Inventing the Self course and had to do the research for my
MA thesis proposal. In combination with 16 hours of work a week and spending
time with my fiance (I don’t want to neglect him! T_T) you can imagine what my
life has been like for the past few weeks. And as I did not experience anything
exciting I thought it would be rather pointless to write an update… Unless
people love to hear me whine about how stressed out I was etc. :P But I really
doubt that. In the meantime I have finished the draft of my MA thesis proposal,
so I have a bit more (though not that much) time at my disposal.
However, I have a quite a few things to blog about
today.

My trip to Birmingham; the continuation.

readers,
Well after being deprived of internet for
almost three days (my gosh that was a trial) I am finally back online and able
to post updates on my days in Birmingham. As you can obviously derive posting a
day to day update on the conference was pretty much impossible. So prepare
yourself for receiving a full report on lots and lots of Victorian things.

BAVS Conference in Birmingham
Dear reader,
Yesterday I booked my flight to Birmingham as well as the accommodation and entrance fee for the conference that I am going to attend there. The conference is held by the British Association of Victorian Studies and will take place at the University of Birmingham on September 1-3. This year’s conference is entitled ‘Composition and Decomposition’.
As many of you know I will be going by myself... and to be honest, I am a little anxious about it. I have always disliked being alone (since it is not much fun), but I will have to learn sometime. Also, since I want to pursue a PHD position it would be a good idea to start going to conferences and symposia to gain experience, as well as to start networking (not like I am such a hero in that respect either, but ok hahah). And when there is no one who can/wishes to come with you (for these conferences really are pricy O.o), going alone is the only option hahah!
